2. Download

Your computer:

Covers Brave, Brave Beta and Brave Nightly.

Who is it for:

Only your account on this Mac.Windows always applies it to the whole PC and asks for administrator permission.

unbraved.mobileconfig  7.7 KBunbraved.reg  1.3 KB

Checked against Brave 1.98 (stable, October 2026).

3. Install it

Your computer asks you to confirm a few times. That's normal.

On a Mac
  1. Open the file you just downloaded. Your Mac says a profile was downloaded.
  2. Open System Settings → General → Device Management and double-click Unbraved.
  3. Click Install…, then Install again. Your Mac notes that the file isn't signed; the questions below explain why. With “Everyone”, it then asks for Touch ID or your administrator password.
  4. Quit and reopen Brave. The extras are gone.
On Windows
  1. Open the file you just downloaded. Windows says the publisher could not be verified: choose Run.
  2. Windows asks if Registry Editor may make changes: choose Yes.
  3. Registry Editor asks whether to continue: choose Yes, then OK.
  4. Restart Brave. The extras are gone.

Note: Afterwards, Brave's menu says “Managed by your organization”. That's your file: Brave says this whenever its settings come from a file like this. Undo it and the message goes away.

Undo it

Restart Brave afterwards, and its own settings apply again.

On a Mac
Open System Settings → General → Device Management, select Unbraved, click the minus button (−) and confirm.
On Windows
Download the undo file and open it, the same way you installed. It clears the 17 settings Unbraved can make, and nothing else. It's the same file for everyone.

What each switch does

Brave's own settings often only hide a button. The file switches the feature itself off and keeps it off. (Tested on Brave 1.97, Mac and Windows.)

Turn off Leo AI in Brave completely

Without UnbravedLeo has a toolbar button, a sidebar item, entries in Brave's menu and its own settings page. With UnbravedLeo is switched off. Its toolbar button, sidebar item, menu entries and settings page are gone.

AI answers in Brave Search come from the search engine, not the browser, so the file doesn't touch them.

What it leaves alone

Apart from Brave's “Managed by your organization” notice, only the switches above change. Everything else stays as you have it.

  • Shields: ad, tracker and fingerprinting blocking, as you set it
  • Sync: bookmarks, passwords and history across devices
  • Passwords and autofill: Brave's password manager keeps working
  • Extensions: everything from the Chrome Web Store
  • Your search engine: whatever you picked stays picked
  • Privacy protections: De-AMP, Global Privacy Control, HTTPS upgrades and the rest
  • Your data: the file has no settings for bookmarks, history or tabs
  • Updates: Brave keeps updating itself as usual

A Brave policy generator, for admins too

Every switch is an official enterprise policy: Brave's own, plus one from Chromium for crash reports. Unbraved writes them into a configuration profile or a registry file. “Mac test result” is what the test on a Mac showed. A Windows 11 virtual machine applied the same 17.

Questions

Is this safe?

Yes. It uses the settings Brave supports for managed computers, the same ones companies use to set up Brave for their staff. The file holds only the settings shown above, plus comments, and you can open it in a text editor first. It's a settings file, not a program.

Why not just use Brave's own settings?

They often only hide a button, and some extras can only be hidden. The file switches the feature itself off and keeps it off.

Does it turn off Brave's ad blocker?

No. Brave Ads are Brave's own ads: the opt-in ads of Brave Rewards, and the sponsored images and sites on new tabs. The images are on by default. Shields, which blocks ads on websites, stays exactly as you set it.

No. Those come from Brave Search, the search engine, not from the browser, so a browser setting can't reach them. The file switches off Leo, the AI assistant inside the browser.

Does it work on Windows Home?

Yes. Brave ignores a few kinds of policy on computers that no company manages, but none of the ones Unbraved uses. It was tested on Windows 11 Home, in a virtual machine.

Do I need administrator rights?

On a Mac, “Just me” asked for no password in testing. “Everyone” asks for Touch ID or an administrator password. On Windows, installing always asks for administrator permission once.

What is the file?

On a Mac, a configuration profile (.mobileconfig) that you approve in System Settings. On Windows, a registry file (.reg) that writes Brave's settings into the Windows registry.

Why does my computer say the file isn't signed?

Because it isn't. On a Mac, signing needs a private key at the moment the file is made, and your file is made right here in your browser. On Windows, every downloaded registry file gets this warning. Unsigned means nobody vouched for the file, not that it's unsafe, and you can read the whole file before you open it.

Does it cover Brave Beta and Nightly?

Yes. The Mac file covers Brave, Brave Beta and Brave Nightly. On Windows, all three read the same settings.

Will a Brave update bring the extras back?

It shouldn't. The settings stay until you undo them. Brave updated itself during testing, and everything stayed off. If Brave adds a new extra later, it isn't covered until this page adds it and you make a new file. The download section shows which Brave version the page was last checked against.

What does the * next to some switches mean?

Stable Brave ships those features switched off for now: On-device AI, Playlist and PSST. Unless you turned one on yourself in brave://flags, Brave's experiments page, nothing visible changes. Switching them off here keeps them off if Brave turns them on later.

Can I change my mind later?

Yes. Make a new file with different choices and open it. On a Mac it replaces the old one, as long as you pick the same “Just me” or “Everyone”; if you switch between them, remove the old one first. On Windows it sets exactly your new choices. Or undo everything, as shown above.

What about Linux, Android and iPhone?

Use Brave Origin. It's free on Linux, and available on Android and iOS, where Brave takes settings like these only from a company's device management.

Does Unbraved collect anything?

Your choices and the file: nothing. The file is made in your browser and never uploaded. The file itself only holds settings, so it can't collect or send anything.

Brave Origin vs Unbraved

If you can, get Brave Origin. It's Brave's own minimal edition, and buying it pays for Brave's development, including the parts you keep using. Unbraved is a free option for Mac and Windows.
